Chapter 3 - The Unlocked Truth

Judge Harrison looked down at the slip of paper again, then stared directly at the passcode entry screen on the tablet.
She turned her gaze toward David at the defense table.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said quietly, her voice carrying across the silent room.
"Do you recognize this device?"
David stood up slowly, leaning over the table to get a better look.
"No, Your Honor," David answered honestly, shaking his head.
"I have never seen that tablet in my life. It does not belong to me, nor does it belong to my wife."
A murmur rippled through the gallery like wind blowing through dry grass.
If it didn't belong to David, and the police had never found it during their raids, how did a seven-year-old boy acquire it?
Judge Harrison looked back down at Toby's handwritten note.
The instructions scribbled on the paper were brief, explicit, and contained a six-digit numerical sequence.
With steady fingers, the judge tapped the six digits into the tablet's touchscreen.
The screen flashed once, illuminated by a bright white light, and unlocked instantly.
An application opened automatically on the display.
It wasn't a gallery of family photos or a collection of mobile games.
It was an encrypted, high-definition digital archive containing hundreds of audio logs, geo-tagged video recordings, and financial transaction ledgers.
Judge Harrison tapped the topmost file labeled MASTER BACKUP - CORRUPTION PROOF.
A wave of audio filled the courtroom through the tablet's small speakers.
The voice that echoed through the room was unmistakable.
It belonged to Arthur Pendelton—the very CFO whose murder the state was currently blaming on David Vance.
"If anyone is listening to this," Arthur's recorded voice stated clearly over the speakers, sounding calm and deliberate.
"Marcus Sterling and his associates are forcing me to embezzle corporate funds to finance their illegal real estate acquisitions. If I try to back out, they have threatened to kill my family. I am recording this as my insurance policy."
The courtroom erupted into a chaotic wave of gasps and shouts.
Judge Harrison banged her heavy wooden gavel three times in rapid succession, the sharp cracks echoing like gunshots.

"Order in this courtroom!" she demanded furiously.
"One more outburst and I will clear the gallery!"
