Chapter 17 - The Aftermath

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the textile mill as dozens of police cruisers and FBI SUVs swarmed the scene. Marcus was dragged out in handcuffs, weeping uncontrollably. Victoria was loaded onto a stretcher, screaming obscenities about Julian and Elise until a paramedic sedated her.
Julian stood by Vance, who was finally getting proper medical attention from the EMTs.
"You good, kid?" Vance grunted, wincing as a needle went into his arm.
"I'm done with this life, Vance. Completely done," Julian said, running a hand through his soot-covered hair.
Eleanor walked past them toward her waiting limousine. She stopped, looking at Julian. "I have established a trust fund for the child. It unlocks when they turn eighteen. You and Elise will receive a monthly stipend. Move to the suburbs. Live your boring, middle-class life. But bring my grandchild to visit on holidays."

Julian watched his mother get into the car. It was the closest thing to an apology he would ever receive from her. A twisted, domineering olive branch.
"I'll think about it," Julian muttered, turning his back on the carnage. He needed to get back to the cabin. He needed to see Elise.
