Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Shadows

The pungent, sickening scent of burning concrete filled the crisp autumn air. Julian stood entirely frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The acid continued to hiss, carving a black, jagged crater into their pristine porch steps. Had that package exploded in Elise’s hands, the acid would have melted through her skin, her bones, and directly into the life growing inside her womb. The very thought made Julian’s vision blur with a terrifying, primal rage.

Elise was on the ground, gasping for air, her hands instinctively wrapped around her swollen belly. She was trembling so violently that her teeth chattered. "Julian..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sizzling chemicals. "Julian, the baby..."

"You're okay. You're both okay," Julian choked out, falling to his knees and pulling her into his chest. He scanned her face, her arms, checking for any stray drops of the lethal liquid. She was unharmed, save for the scraped palms from where she had fallen.

He suddenly remembered the man. The stranger who had shoved her out of the way. Julian snapped his head up, his eyes darting frantically down the street. The man was already half a block away, walking with a pronounced limp, his face obscured by a dark hood.

"Hey!" Julian roared, scrambling to his feet. "Hey, wait! Who are you?"

The stranger didn't stop. He didn't even turn around. He simply raised a gloved hand, holding up two fingers, and slipped into the labyrinth of the city's alleyways.

Julian’s blood ran cold. The stranger hadn't just been passing by. He had been watching them. He knew the package was a bomb. But more horrifying than the stranger's identity was the undeniable reality of the situation: someone in their perfect, upper-class world wanted his pregnant fiancée dead. And Julian had a terrifying suspicion he knew exactly who it was.
