Chapter 13 - The Textile Mill

Julian left Elise and Silas safely locked in the hunting cabin. He refused to let his pregnant fiancée anywhere near the crossfire. Elise fought him, but ultimately agreed she had to protect the baby. Julian kissed her deeply, promising to return, and drove Silas’s SUV back toward the city.

The abandoned textile mill loomed in the darkness like a decaying skeleton of iron and brick. Julian parked a mile away and approached on foot. He slipped through a broken window, moving silently across the catwalks above the factory floor.

He found the central control room and activated Vance’s old contingency traps—heavy steel blast doors that could be dropped remotely, sealing the factory floor from the outside world.

At exactly midnight, a sleek black Mercedes pulled into the crumbling courtyard.

Julian watched from the shadows of the catwalk. The car doors opened. Marcus stepped out first, holding a suppressed pistol. Then, Victoria emerged. She looked like a ghost in the moonlight, wearing an expensive silk trench coat, her face twisted in a mask of manic anticipation.

"Silas!" Marcus called out into the cavernous factory. "Bring them out!"

Julian waited, his finger hovering over the remote detonator that would drop the blast doors. He needed them directly in the center of the kill zone.

"Silas, you incompetent fool, where are you?" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing off the brick walls. "I want to see her! I want to watch the acid finish the job!"

Julian’s blood boiled. He pressed the button.
