Chapter 7 - The Final Straw

Back in South Florida, the magnificent Ashford family Christmas had ended in complete, utter disaster.

Tiffany’s family had packed their bags exactly three days early, absolutely furious about the lack of food, clean towels, and basic hospitality.

"I have never been so insulted in my entire life, Tiffany," Brenda hissed as she dragged her suitcase toward the front door.

"You bragged for months about your massive house and your perfect life, but you are nothing but a total fraud."

Tiffany stood in the messy foyer, completely exhausted, completely humiliated, and entirely alone.

The house was completely trashed, filled with sticky floors, overflowing garbage cans, and broken decorative items.

Kevin finally returned to the house two days after her family had officially evacuated the premises.

He walked through the front door, looking around at the absolute destruction of his mother's beautiful home.

"Look at this place, Tiffany," Kevin said quietly, his voice completely devoid of any emotion.

"It looks exactly like the state of our marriage: a complete, unsalvageable wreck."

Tiffany jumped up from the sofa, her eyes wide with fresh, desperate panic.

"We can clean it, Kevin! We can hire a professional cleaning service tomorrow!" she pleaded frantically.

"With what money, Tiffany? Your credit cards are completely maxed out, and I am not paying another dime," he replied coldly.

"You drove the only person who ever truly cared about us out of her own home because you are impossibly selfish."

"I am so incredibly sorry, I will apologize to Margaret the absolute second she comes back!" Tiffany cried, grabbing his arm.

Kevin gently but firmly pulled his arm out of her desperate grasp.

"It is entirely too late for apologies, Tiffany," Kevin stated firmly, looking her directly in the eyes.

"I spoke to my attorney this morning, and I am officially filing for a divorce."

Tiffany let out a loud, agonizing scream, collapsing completely onto the dirty living room floor.

She begged, she pleaded, and she made a thousand empty promises that she would change her entitled ways.

But Kevin had finally taken off his blinders and saw the ugly, selfish truth of the woman he had married.

He walked into the master bedroom, packed the remainder of his belongings into large boxes, and loaded them into his car.

Before he drove away, he left the unsigned lease agreement sitting directly on the messy kitchen counter.

"My mother will be home in exactly four days," Kevin told her from the doorway.

"You had better have your bags entirely packed when she walks through that door."
