Chapter 1 - The Contents of the Envelope

I slowly slipped one finger beneath the sealed flap of the thick white envelope and smiled.

The sound of the tearing paper echoed loudly in the painfully quiet kitchen.

Kevin and Tiffany stared at my hands as if I were holding a live explosive device.

For five years, I had been the quiet, accommodating mother-in-law who swallowed every insult and scrubbed every floor.

But the woman standing before them today was entirely different.

I pulled out a glossy, multi-page itinerary with a beautiful silver crest stamped at the top.

"This," I said, holding up the colorful booklet, "is a twenty-eight-day, all-inclusive luxury cruise through the Mediterranean."

Tiffany’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.

"It includes a private balcony suite, daily spa treatments, and private excursions in Italy, Greece, and Spain," I continued calmly.

Kevin blinked, trying to process the magnitude of what I was saying.

"Mom, that must have cost a fortune," he stammered nervously.

"It did, Kevin, and I paid for it using the money I saved by not catering to your wife’s outrageous demands this year," I replied.

Tiffany’s face turned a violent shade of red.

"You can't just leave!" Tiffany shrieked, her perfectly manicured hands balling into tight fists.

"My family is expecting a massive, perfect holiday dinner in three days!" she yelled.

"Then you had better start looking up recipes right now," I said, my voice as cold as ice.

But the itinerary was not the only thing hidden inside the thick envelope.

I reached back inside and pulled out a stack of crisp, professionally printed legal documents.

"What is that?" Kevin asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"Since I will be gone for a month, and since you both seem to think this house belongs to you, I visited my attorney yesterday," I explained.

I slapped the heavy stack of papers onto the granite kitchen island.

"This is a formal, legally binding lease agreement," I told them.

"You both have lived completely rent-free in my home for five years."

"Starting January first, you will pay me four thousand dollars a month in rent, which is the current market rate for South Florida."

"If you do not sign it and pay the first month's rent by the time I return, this document serves as your official thirty-day notice of eviction."

Tiffany gasped, clutching her chest as if I had physically struck her.

"You are throwing us out?!" she cried dramatically.

"I am officially retiring from being your unpaid maid, your personal chef, and your financial safety net," I corrected her.

"You have twenty-four hours to decide before my flight leaves, but right now, I need to finish packing my evening gowns."

May you like

I turned my back on them, picked up my empty coffee cup, and walked gracefully out of the kitchen.

For the first time in five long years, I felt like I could finally breathe.
