Chapter 5 - The Vault of Expired Contracts

With a flick of her wrist, Victoria drew a microscopic bead of blood from Elena’s pulse point using the stylus. She pressed the silver tip directly onto the bleeding crimson text of the register. The reaction was instantaneous. The book hissed, emitting a plume of violet smoke that smelled of ozone and old roses—Julian's signature scent.

"It is confirmed," Victoria said, her eyes darkening. "He is anchoring his resurrection through your genetic frequency. We must go to the Vault."

Without waiting for a reply, Victoria swept toward the rear of the library, pressing her palm against a blank section of the oak paneling. The wood dissolved like mist, revealing a spiral staircase of wrought iron plunging into impenetrable darkness.

"What's down there?" Elena asked, peering over the edge.

"The Vault of Expired Contracts," Victoria replied, beginning her descent. "The graveyard of every deal ever struck within these walls. If Julian created a shadow trust, the original physical addendum will be filed in the sub-basement. But keep your Immunity Token clutched in your hand. The Echoes down there do not respect the living."

As they descended, the air grew freezing, heavy with the weight of millions of squandered lifetimes. Faint, whispering voices brushed against their ears—begging, bargaining, crying out for another dawn. Elena shuddered, staying close to Victoria’s dark silhouette.

At the bottom of the stairs stood a colossal vault door made of blackened steel, locked with three massive dials of bone. But as Victoria approached, she stopped cold. The vault door was already cracked open, its heavy bolts sheared cleanly in half from the inside.
