Chapter 16 - The Duel of Ledgers

Arthur plunged his hand into his shredded jacket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound book—a corrupted, modern replica of the iron-clasped register, its pages glowing with sickly green corporate code and occult sigils.

"I write the rules now!" Arthur bellowed. He slammed his hand onto his replica ledger. Instantly, a wave of green kinetic force exploded across the rooftop, tearing the concrete from the steel rebar and hurling Victoria and Elena backward.

Victoria dug her silver stylus directly into the metal deck of the helipad, anchoring herself against the shockwave. She dragged herself forward through the tempest, opening her own black pocket ledger.

What followed was not a physical battle, but a war of fundamental reality.

"Amendment: Asset seizure!" Arthur shouted, scribbling frantically into his green book. A swarm of shadowy, razor-sharp numbers flew from his pages, darting toward Victoria like a flock of birds of prey.

Victoria didn't flinch. She slashed her stylus across her own ledger. "Counter-amendment: Fraudulent entry nullified!"

The black ink from her book erupted upward, transforming into a massive shield of dark energy that collided with Arthur’s attack. The air between them crackled with deafening thunder as the two opposing mathematical laws ground against each other. Time fractured entirely on the roof; raindrops hung frozen in mid-air, lightning bolts paused in their descent, and the sound of the helicopter blades slowed to a deep, mechanical drone.

Slowly, inexorably, Victoria was closing the distance, her severe elegance unshaken by the hurricane of magic attempting to tear her apart.
