Chapter 18 - The Blood Amendment

Victoria looked down at the broken handle of her stylus, then up at Arthur. The chilling composure that had defined her existence did not shatter; instead, it deepened into something far more terrifying. A slow, razor-thin smile curved across her pale lips.

"You have spent three centuries studying my desk, Julian," Victoria said, her voice cutting through the howling storm with absolute clarity. "Yet you still do not understand the first rule of accounting."

She slowly dropped the broken handle of the stylus onto the wet deck. She didn't need a tool.

"An Actuary does not require a pen," she whispered, raising her bleeding left hand—the hand she had sliced open to initiate the audit. "When the ink is already flowing."

Before Arthur could react to her words, Victoria lunged forward with fluid, blinding grace. She bypassed his clumsy knife thrust entirely, slamming her bleeding left palm directly onto the center of Arthur’s shirt, pressing her immortal blood right over his heart.

At the same instant, she reached out with her right hand, grabbed Elena by the shoulder, and pulled her into the contact loop, connecting all three of them in a single physical circuit.

"Transfer authorized," Victoria commanded, her eyes blazing like twin supernovas of black and silver light. "Re-routing all unauthorized balance from Proxy Vessel B directly into Deficit Account A! Initiate complete liquidation!"

The crimson brand on Elena's chest flared with blinding light, but instead of downloading Arthur's soul into her, the circuit reversed. Years of corrupted, stolen vitality began to violently siphon out of Arthur, rushing through Victoria's stabilizing anchor and dumping harmlessly into the infinite void of the Manor's archives.
