Chapter 12 - The Actuary’s Gambit

Victoria stared at the electronic tablet, then at Elena, whose eyes were wide with terror. The atmosphere in the ballroom was sterile and freezing—just like her library back home. She felt the familiar, rhythmic cadence of her old duties returning.
"You assume that because I am a clerk, I am without recourse," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a register so deep it vibrated in the glass chandeliers above. She slowly reached into her trench coat and withdrew the black dragon-scale pocket ledger.
"I don't sign digital toys, Julian," she stated, opening the pocket ledger to a blank, virgin page. "And you have fundamentally misunderstood the nature of my position. I am not the Manor’s servant. I am its anchor."
With a swift, brutal motion that defied human sight, Victoria inverted her silver stylus and drove the sharp point directly through the palm of her left hand. Royal, immortal blood—black as obsidian—welled up instantly, pooling onto the blank page of the ledger.

"By the authority of the original covenant of 1692," Victoria chanted, her eyes glowing with blinding silver light. "I invoke the Law of Absolute Reciprocity! I declare an immediate, unrestricted audit of all corporate assets, biological tethers, and shadow trusts associated with Entry #001!"
The reaction was catastrophic. The digital tablet on the table exploded into sparks. The steel shutters covering the windows groaned as an immense, unseen gravitational force slammed into the building from the outside. Victoria hadn't surrendered; she had just turned the entire skyscraper into an extension of Blackwood Manor.
