Chapter 9 - A New Proposition

"I know you didn't," Mr. Maxwell said, walking over to his massive oak desk.
He sat down in his leather chair, steepled his fingers, and looked at the young mother.
"If it wasn't for your daughter wandering in here today, Eleanor would have ruined me financially," he stated.
"That little girl practically saved my private estate accounts from being entirely drained."
Violet, feeling the tension finally leave the room, peeked over Sarah's shoulder and offered the billionaire a tiny smile.
Mr. Maxwell smiled back, a genuine, warm expression that completely changed his entire face.
"I suddenly find myself in need of a new house manager," he announced casually.
Sarah blinked, completely confused by the sudden change in conversation.
"The position requires someone who is deeply honest, fiercely protective, and brave," he listed.
He looked directly into Sarah’s wide, shocked eyes.
"It also comes with a private two-bedroom cottage on the estate grounds, fully furnished," he added.
Sarah’s jaw dropped in absolute disbelief as the reality of his words hit her.
"Are... are you offering me the job, Mr. Maxwell?" she asked, her voice nothing but a breathless whisper.
"I am offering you a safe place to raise your child, Sarah," he corrected gently.
"You will manage the cleaning staff, oversee the daily operations, and you will be paid fairly for it."
"But I have absolutely no experience as a house manager," she argued, still waiting to wake up from this dream.
"You have the exact character I am looking for, and you can learn the rest," he assured her confidently.

He pointed to the beautiful gardens visible through the massive glass windows.
"The cottage has a small yard where Violet can play safely, far away from any expensive vases or open safes."
