Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Gaze

Sarah felt her knees give out, and she collapsed back onto the floor, clutching Violet tightly to her chest.
This was the end of everything.
Mr. Maxwell stepped into the study, his face an unreadable mask of stone.
"Mr. Maxwell, sir," Ms. Sterling said, her voice instantly changing to sweet respect.
"I caught this new maid red-handed, emptying your personal safe with her filthy little child."
Richard Maxwell did not look at the house manager.
He slowly walked around the desk, his eyes fixed firmly on the toddler hiding against Sarah’s chest.
"I told you never to enter this room," Mr. Maxwell said to Sarah, his voice dangerously low.
"I know, sir, I am so sorry," Sarah sobbed, pressing her face into Violet’s messy curls.
"She ran away while I was cleaning the utility closet, and I panicked."
Mr. Maxwell crouched down until he was at eye level with the terrified mother and child.
For a long, agonizing moment, the billionaire said absolutely nothing.
He simply stared at Violet’s face, tracing the shape of her big brown eyes and chubby cheeks.
To Sarah's absolute shock, the coldness in the billionaire's eyes began to melt away.
His hands, which controlled global companies and thousands of employees, began to tremble.
"Where did you get that dress?" Mr. Maxwell whispered, pointing a shaking finger at Violet.
Sarah blinked through her tears, completely confused by the question.
"I... I bought it at a thrift store in the Mission District, sir," she stammered.
Mr. Maxwell reached out slowly, acting as if the toddler were a fragile piece of glass.
He gently touched the collar of the yellow polka-dot dress.
"It has a small white daisy embroidered on the back of the neck, doesn't it?" he asked, his voice cracking.

Sarah was stunned into silence.
She nodded slowly, wondering how this powerful man could possibly know such a tiny detail.
