Chapter 6 - The Setup Revealed

"My granddaughter, Lily," Mr. Maxwell whispered, his thumb gently rubbing the glass of the frame.

"She died in a terrible car accident with my daughter three years ago."

Tears welled up in the billionaire's eyes, making him look surprisingly vulnerable and human.

"I donated all of her clothes to charity last year because looking at them hurt too much," he explained.

He looked down at Violet, a soft, heartbreaking smile touching his lips.

"Seeing your daughter sitting there, wearing that dress... I thought I was looking at a ghost," he confessed.

Sarah felt a deep wave of empathy wash over her, momentarily forgetting her own terror.

"I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, sir," Sarah whispered with genuine grief.

The beautiful moment was rudely broken by Ms. Sterling’s frantic voice.

"This is very touching, sir, but we still have a thief to arrest!" she insisted, pointing a shaking finger at Sarah.

Mr. Maxwell turned to face the house manager, and all the warmth vanished from his expression.

"You are right, Eleanor, we do have a thief to arrest," he said coldly.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his own smartphone, tapping the screen a few times.

"Would you care to explain why my private bank alert shows a massive transfer to your offshore account?" he asked.

Ms. Sterling gasped, taking a stumbling step backward toward the hallway.

"You thought you could empty my cash reserves and frame the new, desperate maid," he continued.

"It was a perfect plan, especially since you knew I would instantly fire anyone who entered my study."

Ms. Sterling began to shake, realizing her entire scheme was falling apart.
