Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

Panic completely took over Ms. Sterling’s mind.
Realizing she was trapped, the house manager made a wild, desperate dash for the door.
She shoved past Mr. Maxwell, knocking the silver picture frame from his hand.
The frame hit the marble floor, the glass shattering into a hundred glittering pieces.
Sarah instinctively curled her body over Violet to protect her from the flying shards.
"Security!" Mr. Maxwell bellowed, his voice echoing loudly down the massive gallery.
Ms. Sterling sprinted down the hallway, her high heels clicking frantically against the hardwood.
But the mansion was heavily guarded, and her escape attempt was completely useless.
Two massive men in dark suits appeared at the top of the stairs, instantly blocking her path.
They grabbed the struggling house manager by her arms, holding her firmly in place.
"Let me go!" Ms. Sterling screamed, thrashing wildly like a trapped animal.
"I dedicated ten years of my life to this house, you owe me that money, Richard!"
Mr. Maxwell walked slowly out of the study, standing at the end of the hall.
"I paid you incredibly well, Eleanor, but greed is a disease you clearly cannot cure," he said with disgust.
"Call the police and hand her over to them," he instructed the security guards.
The guards dragged the screaming woman down the stairs, her curses fading into the distance.
Silence slowly returned to the massive Pacific Heights estate.
Sarah was still sitting on the floor of the study, holding Violet, completely paralyzed by shock.
In less than ten minutes, she had gone from fearing for her freedom to witnessing the downfall of her cruel boss.

She slowly stood up, brushing the invisible dust from her cheap black uniform.
She knew she still had to be fired for breaking the rules and bringing a child to work.
