Chapter 5 - The Cinderella Gala

The night of the gala arrived. The ballroom of the Pierre Hotel in New York was dripping in crystal, orchids, and the absolute elite of global society.
Clara stood in her dressing room, trembling. Julian had spared no expense. She wore a custom, emerald-green silk gown that brought out the gold flecks in her hazel eyes. The dress was designed with a high neck and elegant, draped sleeves, intentionally crafted to conceal the scars on her back and shoulder without looking prudish. She looked like royalty.
"You are breathtaking," Julian murmured, stepping up behind her and kissing her neck. "Are you ready?"
"They are going to eat me alive," Clara whispered.
"They can try," he smiled. "But they have to get through me first."
When Julian and Clara descended the grand staircase into the ballroom, the silence was deafening. Every eye turned to the former maid who had captured the billionaire's heart. Whispers rippled through the crowd like a foul wind.
Clara kept her chin high, clinging to Julian's arm.
Halfway through the evening, Victoria Sterling made her move. She approached their table, flanked by three influential tech investors Julian needed for his next project. Victoria was wearing a dress deliberately chosen to mock Clara—a cheap-looking maid's apron ironically tailored into a high-fashion piece by a provocative designer.
"Julian, darling," Victoria purred, ignoring Clara entirely. "Mr. Henderson and I were just discussing your new AI initiative. But we are a bit concerned about... leadership stability."
Henderson, an older, conservative investor, cleared his throat. "Yes, Vance. Word is you've been entirely distracted by... domestic matters. A CEO needs absolute focus."
Victoria turned her cruel gaze to Clara. "It must be so overwhelming for you, Clara. All these big numbers and big words. Do you ever miss just... sweeping the floors? It was so much simpler, wasn't it?"
The table fell silent. This was the test.
Clara did not look down. She looked Victoria dead in the eye, and then turned her attention to Mr. Henderson.
"Mr. Henderson," Clara said, her voice clear and remarkably steady. "My husband's new AI initiative is designed to streamline logistics in crisis zones. It's meant to ensure that resources reach the vulnerable before disaster strikes."
Henderson blinked, surprised she knew the specifics of the project. "Well... yes."
"I know what it means to be vulnerable," Clara continued, her voice ringing with a quiet, undeniable power. "I know what it means to wait for help when everything is burning down around you. Julian isn't distracted by domestic matters. He is grounded by them. He understands that technology is useless if it doesn't serve humanity. My husband has a heart to match his intellect. If you can't see the value in a CEO who values people over profits, then perhaps your money belongs in a colder company."
The silence that followed was absolute.

Then, slowly, Mr. Henderson began to clap. He chuckled, raising his champagne glass. "Well said, Mrs. Vance. Well said indeed. Julian, your wife is a force of nature. You have my backing."
Victoria’s face mottled with rage as Julian pulled Clara in for a kiss, the flashbulbs of the press capturing the moment the maid became a queen.
