Chapter 2 - The Viper's Den

The honeymoon in the Maldives was a paradise of healing for Clara. For the first time in her life, she was pampered, cherished, and allowed to simply exist without the crushing weight of survival. Julian worshipped her, ensuring that every lingering insecurity about her scars was erased by his devotion.
But reality awaited them at the wrought-iron gates of the Newport estate.
As their limousine pulled up the sweeping driveway, Clara’s heart sank. Parked directly in front of the grand entrance was a sleek, silver Bentley.
"My mother," Julian muttered, his jaw tightening. "I explicitly told the staff she was not to be given a key."
When Julian and Clara entered the grand foyer, they were not greeted by the welcoming smiles of the staff, but by the icy, disdainful glare of Eleanor Vance. Sitting beside Eleanor on a velvet settee was Victoria Sterling—a stunning, statuesque blonde socialite whose family owned half the real estate in Manhattan. Victoria had been Eleanor’s hand-picked choice for Julian’s bride.
"Welcome home, Julian," Eleanor said, rising slowly, her eyes raking over Clara's simple, elegant sundress with obvious disgust. "And... Clara. I see the tropical sun didn't burn away your common roots."
"Mother," Julian warned, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "You are a guest in my home. You will speak to my wife with respect, or you will leave immediately."
Victoria stood, flashing a brilliant, predatory smile. "Oh, Julian, don't be so harsh. Eleanor was simply worried. It’s been a whirlwind, hasn’t it? Eloping with the help. It’s the scandal of the season. I just came to offer my support to the new... Mrs. Vance. Navigating our world can be so terribly confusing for someone who doesn't know which fork to use for the salad course."
Clara squeezed Julian's hand. She was used to cruel words, but the sheer venom radiating from the two women was suffocating.
"Clara doesn't need your help, Victoria," Julian said coldly. "And she certainly doesn't need yours, Mother. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have a very important arrival to prepare for."
Eleanor’s perfectly arched eyebrows shot up. "An arrival? Don't tell me you've invited her barefoot relatives to my son's estate."
"I am bringing my family home," Clara said softly, finding her voice. Her chin lifted. "Leo, Sam, and Mia are coming to live with us."
Eleanor let out a sharp, theatrical laugh. "The illegitimate children! Oh, Julian, you truly are a fool. You're turning this historic mansion into an orphanage for bastards!"
"Get out," Julian roared. The sheer volume of his voice echoed off the marble walls, making both Eleanor and Victoria flinch. "Get out of my house. And if I hear you speak of my wife or my new siblings with anything less than absolute reverence again, I will cut you off from the Vance trust entirely. Test me, Mother."

Eleanor’s face went pale. She grabbed her designer handbag, her lips pursed in fury. "You are blinding yourself, Julian. She is a gold-digger. And she will drag your empire into the mud."
As the women swept out, Victoria paused by Clara, lowering her voice so Julian couldn't hear. "Enjoy the fairy tale while it lasts, Cinderella. Because the clock is going to strike midnight very soon."
