Chapter 3 - Echoes in the Halls

Two days later, a private jet chartered by Julian landed at the local airstrip, carrying three very small, very terrified children.
Leo was ten, fiercely protective and carrying a battered backpack. Sam was eight, wide-eyed and clutching his older brother's hand. Little Mia was five, holding a worn stuffed rabbit. They stepped out of the black SUV and stared up at the towering Newport mansion, their mouths hanging open.
"Clara!" Mia shrieked, breaking away from her brothers and running up the massive stone steps.
Clara fell to her knees, catching the little girl in her arms and burying her face in Mia’s messy curls, weeping freely. "I missed you. I missed you so much."
Leo and Sam approached more cautiously. They looked at Julian, the towering billionaire in a tailored suit, with deep suspicion.
"Are you the boss?" Leo asked, his voice guarded. "Are you going to make Clara work all night again?"
Julian crouched down so he was eye-level with the boy. He saw the defensive posture, the premature maturity of a boy who had lost his childhood to tragedy.
"No, Leo," Julian said softly. "I'm Julian. And I promise you, Clara is never going to work again. My job is to take care of her, and to take care of you, if you'll let me."
He held out his hand. Leo stared at it for a long moment before firmly shaking it.
The first week was a chaotic adjustment. The quiet, pristine mansion was suddenly filled with the sounds of cartoons, running footsteps, and laughter. Julian, who had lived a solitary, highly structured life, found himself entirely enamored with the chaos. He canceled board meetings to teach Sam how to play chess. He bought Mia an entire room full of dolls.
But outside the estate, the wolves were gathering.
Eleanor had not been idle. She had been working the phones, calling every influential board member of Julian's tech empire, planting seeds of doubt.
Julian has lost his edge, she whispered at high-society luncheons. He's playing playing house with a maid and her bastard children. He’s distracted. Unstable.
Clara felt the shifting tide. She noticed the way the household staff—some loyal to Eleanor—whispered when she walked by. She noticed Julian staying up later in his study, massaging his temples as stock prices experienced unexplained, minor dips.
"I'm ruining your life," Clara whispered one night, standing in the doorway of his study, watching him pore over quarterly reports.
Julian looked up, closing his laptop immediately. He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms. "You didn't ruin my life, Clara. You gave me one. Before you, this house was just a museum. Now, it's a home."
"Your mother is plotting something," she warned. "I can feel it."

"Let her plot," Julian said fiercely. "I am a Vance. I built this company from nothing. I can protect my family."
But Julian underestimated just how low his mother was willing to stoop.
