Chapter 5 - Clara’s Secret Diary

“My darling Julian,” Clara’s voice crackled through the laptop speakers, fragile yet laced with a fierce, maternal resolve that made the hairs on Julian’s neck stand up. On the screen, she was sitting in a dimly lit, sterile hospital room, wearing a plain white gown, glancing nervously toward the locked door every few seconds. “If you are watching this, it means I am gone, and I pray to God that our daughters are safely in your arms.”

Julian reached out, his fingers trembling as they traced the image of his wife’s cheek on the cold monitor. “I’m here, Clara. I have them. I’m right here.”

“You must understand why I lied to you,” Clara continued, a tear slipping down her pale face. “When I found out I was pregnant with twins, I was the happiest woman on earth. I couldn't wait to tell you. But the next day, after my routine blood test at the family clinic, your mother came to see me privately at the townhouse while you were in Tokyo for that merger.”

Clara paused, her breathing shallow and ragged on the recording. “Victoria didn't congratulate me, Julian. She brought a private legal contract and a doctor on her payroll. She told me that a commoner like me would never be permitted to birth the heirs to the Sterling empire. She demanded I terminate the pregnancy and accept ten million dollars to divorce you quietly. When I refused, she started changing my medication.”

A collective chill fell over the safehouse room. David cursed under his breath, his fist slamming silently onto the desk.

“Within weeks, I became desperately ill,” Clara whispered, looking directly into the camera lens with haunting intensity. “I realized she was poisoning me, Julian. Slow-acting botanical toxins added to my daily supplements by the house staff she controlled. I knew if I told you, you would go to war with her, and she would find a way to eliminate both me and the babies before you could prove anything. So, I staged my own physical decline. With the help of my loyal nurse, Sarah, I faked the severity of my organ failure and let your mother transfer me to this secluded hospice.”

Clara reached out on the video, holding up a tiny, newborn baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket, while a second bundled baby slept peacefully in a crib behind her. “I gave birth to Aurora and Stella in secret three weeks ago. Sarah is taking them into hiding today. I am too weak from the toxins to survive much longer, my love. But I kept them safe for you. Promise me you will destroy your mother's control over our family. Promise me you will protect our little lights.”

The video cut to black. Julian stood frozen in the silent room, his heart transformed into a solid block of burning, vengeful steel.
