Chapter 20 - A House Filled with Laughter

That evening, as the purple and orange hues of the mountain sunset bathed Lake Tahoe in twilight, the grand lake estate was alive with a warmth it hadn't known since Clara’s days. In the formal dining room, a massive birthday cake decorated with four glowing candles sat in the center of the mahogany table.
Aurora and Stella stood on their chairs, blowing out the candles together with puffed cheeks while Julian, Sarah, David, and the estate staff clapped and cheered around them.
After the cake was served and the girls were happily smeared with chocolate frosting, Julian stepped away from the noisy dining room and walked out onto the wraparound wooden deck overlooking the dark, peaceful waters of the lake. The night sky was brilliant, packed with millions of shining stars that seemed close enough to touch above the mountain peaks.
Julian reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out the small silver pendant engraved with the letter C on a brand-new platinum chain. He held it between his fingers, watching the starlight reflect off the polished metal.
The sliding glass door opened softly behind him, and tiny bare feet pattered across the wooden deck planks. Julian turned to see Aurora and Stella walking out in their matching pajamas, rubbing their tired eyes after the long day of celebration.
“Daddy?” Aurora whispered, looking up at him as she reached for his hand. “Why are you out here by yourself? Are you sad again?”
Julian knelt down on one knee on the deck, drawing both of his daughters into his arms so they could feel the strong, steady beat of his heart. He looked at their beautiful brown eyes—the exact same eyes that had looked back at him from Clara’s face when they first fell in love.
“I’m not sad at all, my sweet girls,” Julian said, his voice husky with profound, everlasting gratitude. He gently placed the silver C pendant into Aurora’s small palm, closing her tiny fingers around it with a warm smile. “I was just looking up at the stars and telling your mommy that her dream came true.”
Stella leaned her head against Julian’s broad shoulder, yawning softly as she watched the shimmering water below. “What was Mommy’s dream, Daddy?”

Julian kissed both of their foreheads, pulling them tight against his chest as the warm mountain wind rustled the pine trees surrounding the lake house.
“She dreamed of filling this house with laughter,” Julian whispered into the starlit night, feeling Clara’s loving presence finally at peace all around them. “And because of you two little brave heroes... this house will never be silent again.”
