Chapter 9 - The Queen’s Mercy

While Julian was executing his wrath, chaos erupted at the Sterling estate.
Beatrice had been pacing the parlor, convinced Julian was finally packing Clara’s bags. But as she walked past the grand staircase, she heard a terrifying crash from the upper hallway, followed by a child's scream.
Mia had been playing on the balcony overlooking the grand foyer. She had climbed onto a decorative mahogany table to reach a balloon, but the antique table splintered beneath her weight. Mia tumbled backward, slipping through the wide balustrades, plummeting toward the marble floor twenty feet below.
Beatrice screamed, freezing in sheer terror.
But Clara didn't freeze.
Clara had been walking out of her bedroom. Seeing her little sister falling, Clara didn't think. She threw herself entirely over the railing, diving onto the marble floor below.
CRACK.
Clara hit the ground violently, twisting her body at the very last microsecond to catch Mia against her chest, absorbing the entire, catastrophic impact with her own body.
"Clara!" Beatrice shrieked, running to them, her heels slipping on the marble.
Mia was crying, terrified, but completely unharmed, safely cocooned in Clara’s arms. But Clara wasn't moving. Her arm was twisted at a sickening angle, and a small pool of blood was forming near her temple where she had struck the floor.
"Call an ambulance! Now!" Beatrice screamed at the staff, dropping to her knees.
For the first time in her life, the aristocratic Beatrice Sterling didn't care about the blood ruining her Chanel skirt. She pulled off her silk scarf and pressed it to Clara's bleeding head, her hands shaking violently.
"Stay with me, Clara. Please, you brave, foolish girl, stay with me," Beatrice wept, cradling the maid she had despised.
When Julian arrived at the hospital two hours later, he looked like a man ready to tear the world apart. He found his mother sitting outside the ICU, her clothes stained with blood, holding little Mia in her lap.
"How is she?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking.
"She has a broken arm, two fractured ribs, and a concussion," Beatrice said, her voice thick with tears. She looked up at her son, her arrogant facade completely and permanently shattered. "She saved Mia's life, Julian. She threw herself off a balcony without a single second of hesitation. She is... she is extraordinary."
Julian closed his eyes, leaning his head against the wall in relief.
A week later, Clara was resting in the master bedroom back at the estate, her arm in a cast. The door slowly opened, and Beatrice walked in, carrying a tray of tea.
The older woman sat on the edge of the bed. She looked down at her hands for a long time.
"I have been a cruel, vicious old woman," Beatrice finally whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I judged you for the dirt on your hands, without ever seeing the absolute purity of your heart. I am deeply, profoundly sorry, Clara. You are twice the woman I am, and I would be honored if you would allow me to be a grandmother to these children."

Clara looked at the proud woman, humbled and weeping. She reached out with her good hand and gently squeezed Beatrice's fingers.
"In this family, we don't hold onto the past," Clara smiled softly. "We only build the future. Thank you, Beatrice."
