Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

For two months, life at the Sterling estate was a paradise Clara had never dared to dream of. The children flourished. Julian hired the best tutors, bought them mountains of toys, and spent his weekends teaching Leo and Toby how to sail in the Hamptons bay. Mia followed Julian around like a shadow, demanding he carry her on his shoulders, completely melting the billionaire's heart.
But true happiness always draws the attention of monsters.
The monster from Clara’s past had a name: Silas Vance.
Silas was Clara’s ex-stepfather. He was the man who had caused the fire that night in Kentucky after passing out drunk with a lit cigarette. He had survived, crawled out of the wreckage, and abandoned Clara and the kids to the flames. He had spent the last ten years in and out of county jails for petty theft and assault.
But Silas watched the news. He saw the viral photos of the billionaire CEO Julian Sterling marrying his housekeeper, and he recognized the burn-scarred girl he had left for dead.
One rainy Tuesday, while Julian was in Tokyo closing a major tech acquisition, Clara received a phone call on the estate's private line.
"Hello, little bird," the raspy, alcohol-soaked voice slithered through the receiver.
Clara’s blood ran completely cold. The phone nearly slipped from her trembling hand. "Silas."
"I see you've moved up in the world," Silas chuckled darkly. "A billionaire husband. Fancy mansion. And you even tracked down the brats. Leo, Toby, and Mia. You know, since I was married to your mama, I'm technically their legal guardian. The courts just couldn't find me."
"You lost any right to them the night you left us to burn," Clara hissed, panic closing her throat. "What do you want?"
"Five million dollars," Silas said casually. "Cash. Or I go to the press. I tell them the great Julian Sterling married a trailer-trash whore and illegally kidnapped my kids. I'll drag you into a custody battle that will tank his company's stock, ruin his pristine reputation, and put those kids right back in the foster system."
Clara felt the room spinning. She knew how brutal the press could be. She knew Julian’s board of directors was already skittish about their scandalous marriage. If Silas dragged Julian’s name through the mud, it could destroy his life's work. And the thought of Leo, Toby, and Mia being taken away by child protective services during a legal battle made her physically sick.

"Don't you ever come near them," Clara whispered.
"I'll be in New York on Friday," Silas replied. "Have the money, Clara. Or I burn your life down. Again."
