Chapter 7 - The Shattered Glass

Julian’s private jet landed at JFK on Saturday morning. He was exhausted but smiling, holding a teddy bear for Mia and a rare tech gadget for the boys. All he wanted was to see his wife.
When he walked into the estate, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Beatrice was sitting in the grand parlor, sipping tea, a manila folder resting on the mahogany table in front of her.
"Welcome home, Julian," Beatrice said softly. "I suggest you sit down."
Julian frowned, tossing his briefcase to the butler. "Where is Clara?"
"Perhaps you should look at these before you call for your darling wife," Beatrice said, sliding the folder across the table.
Julian opened it. His heart stopped. There were high-definition photos of Clara in Brooklyn, handing the priceless Sterling Sapphire Necklace to a scruffy, dangerous-looking older man.
"She is stealing from you, Julian," Beatrice said, her voice laced with tragic victory. "She is selling off our family heirlooms to some street thug. I warned you. You can't turn a maid into a queen. They will always return to the gutter."
"No," Julian whispered, shaking his head. "There is an explanation for this."
"The explanation is that you were blinded by lust and pity!" Beatrice snapped.
Julian stormed up the stairs to the master suite. Clara was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking pale and exhausted. When she saw Julian, her eyes lit up, but the joy vanished instantly when she saw the fury and heartbreak etched into his features.
He threw the photographs onto the bed.
"Julian..." Clara gasped, covering her mouth.
"Who is he?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low. "Who is the man you gave my grandmother's necklace to? A lover? A pimp from Kentucky?"
"No! Julian, please!" Clara cried, tears immediately falling. "It's Silas! My ex-stepfather! The man who started the fire!"
Julian froze, the anger stuttering in his chest. "What?"
Clara broke down, sobbing hysterically as she confessed everything. The blackmail. The threat to take the children. The fear that Silas would ruin Julian’s reputation and company.
"I was just trying to protect you!" Clara wept, falling to her knees on the plush carpet. "I was trying to protect our family! I'm so sorry, Julian! I'm so sorry!"
Julian stared down at his wife, kneeling on the floor, weeping in terror. The anger completely vanished, replaced by a profound, agonizing guilt. She hadn't betrayed him; she had sacrificed her own integrity to save him. She had faced a monster alone because she thought she wasn't worthy of burdening him with her past.
Julian dropped to his knees, pulling Clara fiercely into his arms, crushing her against his chest. "You absolute fool," he whispered into her hair, his own tears falling. "Why didn't you trust me? I'm your husband. We share everything. The good, the bad, and the monsters."

"He said he would take them away," she sobbed into his expensive suit.
"Nobody takes what is mine," Julian vowed, his voice turning ice-cold, vibrating with a lethal promise. "Nobody."
