Chapter 2 - The Vipers' Den

The Sterling ancestral estate in the Hamptons was a sprawling, Gilded Age mansion that sat on fifty acres of pristine oceanfront property. As Julian’s black Maybach rolled up the crushed-gravel driveway the morning after their honeymoon, Clara felt a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. Two weeks ago, she had been polishing the brass doorknobs of this very house. Today, she was arriving as its mistress.

Standing on the grand portico, flanked by a dozen uniformed staff members, was Beatrice Sterling. Julian’s mother wore a tailored Chanel suit and an expression of pure, concentrated venom.

Julian stepped out first, extending his hand to help Clara from the car. She wore a simple, elegant ivory dress that Julian had ordered for her, her hair swept up in a neat chignon. She looked beautiful, but Beatrice’s eyes stripped her down to the maid's uniform she used to wear.

"Welcome back, Julian," Beatrice said, offering her cheek for a kiss, completely ignoring Clara. "I see you brought your... charity case."

"Mother," Julian’s voice cracked like a whip, echoing across the silent courtyard. The staff flinched. "You will address Clara as Mrs. Sterling. And you will speak to her with the utmost respect, or I will personally pack your bags and move you into the city penthouse."

Beatrice’s jaw tightened. "You would throw your own mother out for a housekeeper?"

"For my wife," Julian corrected, pulling Clara firmly to his side. "And I suggest you have the East Wing prepared by tomorrow afternoon. Clara’s siblings are arriving."

The gasp that rippled through the staff was audible. Beatrice’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "Siblings? The rumors said they were her bastard children! Julian, you cannot be serious! You are turning this estate into a squatter's camp!"

"They are blood relatives of the Sterling family now," Julian said coldly. "And anyone in this house who makes them feel anything less than royalty will be fired on the spot. Is that understood?"

The staff immediately bowed their heads in unison. "Yes, Mr. Sterling."

Clara squeezed Julian’s hand, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it threatened to break her chest open. For ten years, she had fought the world entirely alone. Now, she had a protector.

But as they walked through the grand mahogany doors, Clara caught the murderous glare in Beatrice’s eyes. The older woman was not going to surrender her kingdom to a maid without a war.
