Chapter 6 - The Sabotage

For the next month, I went to work.

I changed the harsh fluorescent lights in the executive suites to soft, adjustable LEDs. I installed acoustic paneling in the hallways to kill the echoes. I created a sensory room on the top floor filled with weighted blankets, dim lights, and zero screens.

Leo flourished. He started communicating using a tablet I helped program, tapping icons to tell Victoria when he was hungry, tired, or overwhelmed.

But Julian wasn't finished.

The quarterly board meeting was approaching. It was the day Julian planned to call for a vote of no confidence against Victoria to steal the company.

The night before the meeting, I was doing a final sweep of the executive boardroom. I noticed something strange.

The thermostat had been tampered with. The internal wiring for the sound system had been crossed to produce a high-pitched, nearly inaudible frequency—a sound most adults wouldn't notice, but one that would feel like an icepick to an autistic child’s ears.

Julian had paid someone to sabotage the room. He knew Victoria always brought Leo to the office on Fridays. He was trying to trigger a massive, violent meltdown in front of the entire board of directors to prove she was an unfit mother.

I didn't fix it.

Instead, I pulled out my phone and called an old friend in IT. "I need you to pull the security footage for the boardroom from the last four hours."
