Chapter 5 - The Offer

Julian and his doctors stormed out, threatening lawsuits and custody hearings.

Victoria sank into her chair, looking at her son, who was peacefully continuing his architectural masterpiece.

"Arthur," she said softly. "I can't lose him. Julian has half the board in his pocket. They think Leo is a liability. They think I'm a liability for keeping him here."

"They're wrong," I said.

"I need you," Victoria said, standing up. "I don't want you fixing elevators anymore. I want you to be the Director of Environmental Accessibility for Sterling Apex. And I want you to be Leo’s personal advocate. Name your salary."

I looked at the billionaire CEO. She wasn't offering me a job; she was asking me to help her build a fortress around her child.

"I'll take the job," I said. "But on my terms. I don't wear suits. I don't sit in boardrooms pretending to care about software. And I get full authority to redesign this building to make it safe for Leo."

Victoria smiled. It was the first genuine smile I had seen on her face. "You have a blank check, Arthur."
