Chapter 6 - The 45th Floor

Clara’s new reality felt like a fever dream. Gone were the harsh fluorescent lights of the basement and the smell of bleach. Now, her days were filled with espresso machines, ergonomic chairs, and the soft hum of high-level negotiations.
She was assigned a cubicle outside the executive suites. Her direct supervisor was a senior accountant named Richard, a pompous man who clearly despised the fact that a "janitor" had been thrust into his elite department.
"Just input these data entries, Vance," Richard sneered on her third day, dropping a stack of dense files on her desk. "Try not to mess it up."
Clara didn't flinch. She opened the files and went to work. By 2:00 p.m., she had not only inputted the data but had found a three-percent discrepancy in Richard’s quarterly projections.
She stood up to stretch, walking toward the breakroom to refill her battered flask with hot water. As she turned the corner, she nearly collided with a solid chest.
"Careful," a deep voice chuckled.
Clara looked up into Julian’s eyes. He was holding a cup of black coffee, looking entirely too handsome.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Hayes," Clara stammered, stepping back.
"Julian," he corrected softly. "How is the traineeship going, Clara?"
It was the first time he had said her name. A shiver ran down her spine. "It's... incredible. Thank you. For the opportunity."
Julian took a step closer. The air between them suddenly felt highly charged, crackling with an unspoken tension. "You earned it. By the way, your flash drive was on my desk. Your algorithms are exceptional."
May you like
Clara’s eyes widened. "You looked at my drive? You're the one who created this program..."
Julian didn't deny it. He just held her gaze, the intensity in his eyes making her breath hitch. "I don't let brilliant things slip through the cracks, Clara."
