Chapter 10 - Breaking the Glass

"Then why?" Clara whispered, staring up at the billionaire who had flipped her life upside down. "Why did you hire me? Why did you pay for my brother? Why do you even see me?"

Julian sighed, a heavy, ragged sound. He reached up, his fingers gently brushing a stray curl away from her tear-stained cheek. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

"Because I watched you," Julian confessed, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "For months, Clara. I stood in my penthouse and watched you walk into my building at dawn. I watched a girl with broken boots carry a heavier burden than any executive I know, and do it with more grace than I possess."

Clara’s breath hitched. She had assumed she was entirely invisible all those months.

"You aren't a charity case, Clara. You're a revelation," Julian continued, his hand cupping her jaw. "I didn't pay that bill to buy you. I paid it because the thought of you crying in that elevator tore my chest open. I did it because I care about you."

Clara stared into his eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability he hid from the rest of the world. All her defenses, built up over years of hardship, suddenly crumbled.

She leaned forward, closing the final inch between them, and pressed her lips to his.

Julian let out a sharp breath, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against him. The kiss was desperate, fierce, and tasting of rain and relief. In the shadow of the massive hospital, surrounded by the noise of the city, Clara finally felt something she hadn't felt in years.

She felt safe.

When they finally pulled apart, Julian rested his forehead against hers. "Let me help you carry the weight, Clara. Just let me in."

Clara closed her eyes, a soft smile breaking through her tears. "Okay."
