Chapter 13 - Standing Ground

Richard scoffed. "Don't let her touch the terminal, she's trying to cover her tracks—"

"Sit down, Richard," Julian snapped, the authority in his voice vibrating off the glass walls. He gestured to his own laptop at the head of the table. "The floor is yours, Miss Vance."

Clara walked to the front of the room. Her hands were shaking, but her mind was razor-sharp. She plugged her security key into Julian's laptop. She didn't open the spreadsheet; instead, she opened the raw, backend server logs.

"As someone who grew up fixing broken things," Clara addressed the room, her voice gaining strength, "I know that when something suddenly breaks, you don't just look at the damage. You look at who touched it last."

She typed a complex string of commands she had learned while taking advanced IT modules at community college. Code cascaded down the projection screen.

"My final save on the ledger was Friday at 6:02 p.m.," Clara explained, pointing to a line of green text. "But the server shows a backdoor access token was used to open the file at 6:14 p.m. The file was altered from an IP address inside this building."

Richard’s smug smile began to falter. He began to sweat.

"I just pinged the IP address," Clara said, hitting the enter key. A MAC address and an office location popped up in glaring red letters on the screen.

Location: Office 45-B. User ID: Richard.Sterling.

The boardroom fell into a stunned, absolute silence.

Clara turned away from the screen and locked eyes with Richard. "I didn't miss the toxic debt, Richard. You planted it to sabotage the merger. And you used my name as a shield."

Julian stood up slowly. He buttoned his suit jacket, looking at Richard with eyes that promised absolute destruction.

"Richard," Julian said softly. "You're fired. Security will escort you to the lobby. My lawyers will contact you regarding corporate espionage."
