Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Room

Three days later, Clara sat in a plush, velvet chair in the human resources suite on the 40th floor. She wore her only blazer—bought from a thrift store and carefully tailored by hand—and a pair of cheap slacks. She felt like an imposter.
Across the glass table sat Sarah, the HR Director, who looked over Clara’s handwritten resume with polite skepticism.
"Miss Vance, this program is highly intensive," Sarah said diplomatically. "Your background is... unconventional. What makes you think you can handle corporate acquisitions?"
Before Clara could answer, the heavy oak door to the interview room opened.
Julian Hayes walked in.
Clara’s heart stopped. He was the man from the lobby. The CEO. He wore a navy suit that commanded the room instantly. Sarah jumped to her feet, but Julian waved her down and took a seat in the corner shadow of the room, crossing his legs.
"Continue, Sarah," Julian said smoothly. "I'm just observing."
Clara swallowed hard, forcing her gaze back to Sarah, but she could feel Julian’s piercing eyes on her.
"I can handle it," Clara said, her voice shaking slightly before she forced it steady. "Because I understand margins. When you live on the edge of poverty, every single penny is an acquisition. I don't build financial models based on theory; I build them based on survival. Give me a raw data set, and I will find the leaks your senior analysts ignore because they’ve never had to count change to buy bread."
The room fell dead silent. Sarah blinked, taken aback by the raw, fierce honesty.

From the corner, Julian leaned forward. "She’s hired," he said simply.
Clara gasped, looking over at him. Julian met her eyes, a faint, genuine smile playing on his lips. "Welcome to the 45th floor, Miss Vance."
