Chapter 7 - Eleanor's Awakening
The hospital room was completely dark, save for the glow of the streetlights outside.
Eleanor lay in her bed, fighting a grueling internal battle.
The poison was finally leaving her system, and sensation was slowly returning to her limbs.
Her fingers twitched.
Then her toes.
She forced her eyes open, feeling the heavy fog lift from her brain.
A nurse walked in to check her IV drip, humming a quiet tune.
Eleanor took a deep, shuddering breath and forced her vocal cords to work.
"Water," she croaked, her voice dry and raspy.
The nurse dropped her clipboard, her eyes widening in absolute shock.
"Oh my god, you're awake!" the nurse gasped, rushing to her side with a cup of ice water.
Eleanor drank greedily, the cool liquid soothing her burning throat.
"Where is Maria?" Eleanor asked, her voice growing stronger with every passing second.
The nurse looked down, an uncomfortable expression crossing her face.
"She... she was arrested this afternoon, ma'am," the nurse admitted.
"The police found the poison in her apartment."
Eleanor’s heart pounded furiously against her ribs.
She knew instantly what David had done.
"Get me Detective Vance," Eleanor demanded, sitting up slightly.
"Do not tell my husband that I am awake."
"If David finds out I can speak, he will try to kill me right here in this bed."
The nurse nodded quickly and ran out of the room to make the call.
Within twenty minutes, Detective Vance slipped into the room, locking the door behind him.
"Mrs. Vance, it is incredibly good to hear your voice," the detective smiled.
Eleanor looked at him with a fire burning fiercely in her eyes.
"Maria is innocent, Detective," Eleanor said firmly.
"I know," Vance replied, pulling up a chair.
"We have Dr. Aris in custody, and he confessed to the whole cover-up."
"But we need David to confess on tape to the actual poisoning to ensure he never sees the outside of a cell."
