Chapter 4 - The Mistress and the Poison

The police could not arrest David based solely on an illegally recorded conversation in a hospital room.

His expensive lawyers arrived within minutes, threatening lawsuits and demanding his immediate release.

David walked out of the hospital that night, looking smug and entirely untouchable.

But Detective Vance knew that guilty men always make mistakes when they feel pressured.

He assigned two undercover officers to tail David's sleek black Mercedes.

Instead of going back to the grieving family mansion, David drove to a high-end luxury apartment downtown.

He knocked frantically on the door of penthouse suite 4B.

A stunning blonde woman in a silk robe opened the door, looking irritated.

It was Chloe, Eleanor’s supposed "best friend" and business partner.

"Are you insane coming here tonight?" Chloe hissed, pulling him inside and locking the door.

"The police are everywhere, David!"

David paced the expensive hardwood floor, running his hands through his perfectly styled hair.

"The maid knows, Chloe," he panicked.

"She has the receipt for the tetrodotoxin, and she told the cops."

Chloe poured herself a glass of wine, rolling her eyes at his sudden lack of composure.

"I told you to use the digital currency, you idiot," she sighed.

"But it doesn't matter, the doctor who signed the death certificate is on our payroll."

"He will swear under oath that it was a natural heart failure."

"They have no physical proof that we administered the poison."

What neither of them realized was that Maria was not just a maid.

Before she had taken the job at Eleanor's mansion, Maria had spent five years working as a private investigator in her home country.

She was currently sitting on the fire escape outside Chloe's window, shivering in the cold night air.

She held a high-directional microphone, recording every single word of their sinister confession.

Chloe was the mastermind behind the money laundering, and David was her willing executioner.

Maria smiled in the dark, packing up her equipment.

She had the missing puzzle piece.
