Chapter 3 - The Secret Will

Inside the sterile hospital room, machines beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm.

Eleanor was finally stable, though the heavy paralytic drugs still clouded her nervous system.

She could not move her arms or legs, and speaking was impossible.

But her mind was sharp, and she could hear everything happening around her.

The door clicked open, and David slipped into the room, closing it quietly behind him.

He looked over his shoulder, ensuring no nurses were lingering in the hallway.

He approached the hospital bed, his charming facade dropping completely.

"You just couldn't die quietly, could you, darling?" David whispered, his voice dripping with venom.

Eleanor’s eyes darted wildly, panic rising in her chest as she realized she was completely defenseless.

"That stupid maid ruined everything," he hissed, leaning in close to her face.

"But it doesn't matter, Eleanor."

"The poison is still in your system, damaging your organs."

"Another few days, and your heart will give out naturally."

He reached out and stroked her hair, a sickening gesture of fake affection.

"And once you are gone, I get the company, the mansion, and the offshore accounts."

"Because you never got around to changing your will, did you?"

Suddenly, the bathroom door inside the hospital suite swung open.

Maria stepped out, holding a glowing smartphone in her bandaged hands.

"Actually, she did," Maria said boldly, pressing the stop button on her voice recorder app.

David spun around, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage.

"You eavesdropping little rat," he growled, taking a menacing step toward her.

"Mrs. Eleanor had me drive her to the lawyer's office a month ago when she first suspected you were stealing from her," Maria stated firmly.

"She cut you out completely."

David lunged at the maid, but before he could reach her, Detective Vance threw the main door open.

"Back away from her, David!" the detective barked, his hand resting on his holstered weapon.

David raised his hands, a fake, nervous smile instantly appearing on his face.

"Detective, this maid is harassing my sick wife," he lied smoothly.

But the recording on Maria's phone was about to change everything.
