Chapter 5 - The Detective's Discovery

The next morning, Detective Vance sat at his cluttered desk, rubbing his tired eyes.

The autopsy report had originally been rubber-stamped by Dr. Aris, a well-respected medical examiner.

But Vance had pulled some strings and had Eleanor's initial blood work sent to an independent lab in a neighboring state.

The fax machine in the corner whirred to life, spitting out three pages of dense medical jargon.

Vance snatched the paper and scanned the highlighted sections.

There it was.

Massive, lethal traces of synthetic paralytics found deep within her hair follicles and bone marrow samples.

"Got you," Vance muttered, a grim smile spreading across his face.

He picked up his desk phone and dialed the local precinct's financial crimes division.

"I need a full audit on Dr. Aris's offshore bank accounts for the last six months," he ordered.

Within an hour, the truth was laid bare on his desk.

Dr. Aris had received a wire transfer of five hundred thousand dollars from a shell company.

That shell company was registered to Chloe’s boutique marketing firm.

The entire conspiracy was unraveling at breakneck speed.

Vance grabbed his coat and his badge.

He was going to pay Dr. Aris a very unfriendly visit.

When Vance arrived at the medical examiner's office, Dr. Aris was packing a small leather suitcase in a panic.

"Going somewhere, Doc?" Vance asked, leaning casually against the doorframe.

Dr. Aris froze, his face turning the color of chalk.

"I... I have a family emergency out of town," the doctor stammered.

Vance tossed the independent lab report onto the metal autopsy table.

"Your only emergency is explaining how you missed enough poison to kill a horse in Eleanor's system," the detective said coldly.

Dr. Aris looked at the report, his shoulders slumping in complete defeat.

"I'll tell you everything," the doctor whispered.

"Just promise me protection from David."
