Chapter 6 - Betrayal in the Shadows

"Drop the envelope," a cold, familiar voice echoed through the yard.

Sarah stepped out from the shadows behind Mark. She was holding a suppressed 9mm pistol, the laser sight aimed directly at my heart.

"Sarah?" Mark gasped, spinning around. "What are you doing here? I told you I'd handle the blackmailer!"

"You're an idiot, Mark," Sarah said, her voice devoid of any emotion. "You really thought I was going to let you pay off a blackmailer? He'd just keep bleeding us dry. We kill him, dump him, and Elias takes the fall for another missing person."

I slowly lowered my hood. Sarah’s eyes widened in sheer shock. The gun wavered for a split second. "Elias?"

"Hello, darling," I said softly.

"You..." Sarah breathed, recovering her composure quickly. A wicked smile crossed her face. "Even better. The fugitive husband, found dead after a tragic standoff. It wraps up the narrative perfectly."

"You're a monster, Sarah," Mark yelled, realizing he had been played too. "You were going to kill me eventually, weren't you?"

"Probably," she shrugged. She aimed the gun at my head. "Goodbye, Elias."
