Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

The fortieth floor was quiet again.
Lorenzo walked into the server room. Chloe was sitting on the floor, her back against the server racks, clutching her knees. Her laptop lay discarded beside her.
He knelt beside her and pulled her into his arms.
“It’s done,” he whispered into her hair.
“Is he gone?” she mumbled into his chest.
“He’s running. The FBI froze his accounts before he even hit the lobby. Costa is finished. He’ll spend the rest of his life in federal prison.”
Chloe pulled back, pushing her glasses up her nose. “His math was terrible, Lorenzo. He was hiding millions in plain sight. It offended me.”
Lorenzo threw his head back and laughed. It was a rich, deep sound that filled the small room. He kissed her, hard and desperate, tasting tears and adrenaline.
“You are a terrifying woman,” he said against her lips.
“I told you I was good at my job.”
Matteo appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame. “Hate to interrupt the romance, but the legal team wants to know if they should cancel the bankruptcy filings.”
“Cancel them,” Lorenzo said, helping Chloe to her feet. “And open a bottle of the good champagne. We have a victory to celebrate.”
Later that evening, they stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows in Lorenzo’s office, watching the city lights flicker beneath the dark sky. The storm had passed.
“Costa’s empire is crumbling,” Lorenzo said quietly. “The news is already reporting the federal raids in New York.”
“Are we safe?” Chloe asked, leaning her head on his shoulder.
“For the first time in my life, yes,” Lorenzo replied. “There are no more monsters in the shadows, Chloe. You chased them all away with a calculator.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
May you like
Chloe gasped.
“I am a man of my word,” Lorenzo said, dropping to one knee. “You brought my empire to its knees, and now you have me on mine.”
