Chapter 18 - A Different Kind of Mercy

Chloe looked at the boy. In the old days, a rival’s son coming to the lobby to shout at the boss would have been beaten, or worse, to send a message.
But this wasn't the old days.
“Matteo, give us a minute,” Chloe said.
Matteo stepped back, though he kept his eyes locked on Leo.
“Leo,” Chloe said gently. “Your father made choices. You are not responsible for them. But Lorenzo is not responsible for paying for them, either.”
“I’m not asking for a handout!” Leo snapped. “I just… I want to know why. Why did he ruin us?”
“He didn't. He saved the rest of this company from going down with your father.” Chloe opened her folder. She wrote a phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to him.
“What is this?” Leo asked.
“It’s the number for an educational trust fund,” Chloe said. “Lorenzo set it up three months ago. It pays for your tuition, room, and board until you graduate. It’s strictly legal, fully funded, and untouched by the FBI.”
Leo stared at the paper, his hands shaking. “Why would he do this?”
“Because he believes that the sins of the father shouldn't destroy the son. He wanted you to have a chance at a legitimate life. The kind of life he had to fight a war to get.”
Leo looked up, tears brimming in his eyes. The fight had completely left him. “Tell him… tell him I said thank you.”
“I will. Go back to school, Leo. Make something good of your name.”
As Leo walked out into the Chicago afternoon, Chloe felt a presence behind her.
Lorenzo stepped out of the private elevator. He slipped his arm around her waist.
“You handled that well,” he said softly.

“You set up the trust fund,” she replied, leaning against him. “You’re the one who saved him. I just delivered the paperwork.”
“We make a good team,” Lorenzo kissed her hair. “Now, come upstairs. We have a board meeting, and I need you to terrify the marketing department.”
