Chapter 7 - The Download

Two rooms away, inside the reinforced server closet, Chloe stared at her monitors.

A green loading bar appeared on her screen. Connecting to external drive... connection established.

“Got you,” she whispered.

She initiated the cloning sequence. The progress bar crawled. 10%... 15%...

In the boardroom, Costa was talking. He was monologuing, enjoying his victory. “You know, Lorenzo, I always thought you were too soft. Your father, he would have burned Chicago to the ground before selling to a New Yorker. But you? You let a clumsy secretary turn you into a civilian.”

Lorenzo kept his eyes on the laptop screen, watching a tiny hidden window showing the download progress. 35%...

“The business changed, Vinnie,” Lorenzo said evenly.

“The business never changes!” Costa slammed his hand on the table. “Power is power. And right now, I hold it all. Verify the funds. Sign the paper.”

55%...

“The bank server is slow today,” Lorenzo lied smoothly. “Give it a minute.”

In the server room, Chloe was sweating. The drive contained terabytes of encrypted criminal data. It was Costa’s entire life—every bribe, every hit, every extortion racket neatly documented by his meticulous accountant.

75%...

Suddenly, Costa’s accountant leaned forward, squinting at Lorenzo’s laptop. “Wait. That’s not the banking verification screen. The hard drive is indexing. What is it indexing?”

The accountant reached for the cable.

Lorenzo’s hand clamped down on the accountant’s wrist with bone-crushing force. The illusion of the defeated CEO vanished instantly. The shark was back.

“Do not touch my laptop,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

Costa stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. “What are you doing? Unplug that drive!”

95%...

“Sit down, Vinnie,” Lorenzo ordered.

99%... 100%. TRANSFER COMPLETE.

In the server room, Chloe hit ENTER. The files were encrypted, copied, and instantly forwarded to three different secure servers.
