Chapter 16 - Honeymoon in Sicily

For their honeymoon, Lorenzo took her to the one place she never expected to go: Sicily.
Not the dark, dangerous Sicily of mafia movies, but the bright, sun-drenched coast of Taormina. They stayed in a private villa perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea.
It was the first time Chloe had ever seen Lorenzo completely disconnect. He left his encrypted phone in the safe. He didn't wear a suit for two weeks. He wore linen shirts and sunglasses, looking like a ridiculously handsome movie star.
One afternoon, they were walking through the cobblestone streets, eating gelato.
“My grandfather was born near here,” Lorenzo said, pointing toward the rolling hills. “He left for America with nothing. He built the organization because he felt he had no other choice to survive.”
“And you tore it down to survive,” Chloe said.
“Generational progress,” Lorenzo smiled.
Chloe stopped to look at a display of hand-painted ceramics. As she turned, she bumped into a waiter carrying a tray of espresso.
Lorenzo’s hand shot out with lightning speed, catching the tray by the edge before a single drop spilled. He handed it back to the stunned waiter with a polite nod.
“You see?” Lorenzo said, turning back to Chloe. “I am highly necessary to your survival.”
“Show-off,” Chloe grumbled, though she was smiling.
Later that night, sitting on the terrace under a blanket of stars, Lorenzo poured them both a glass of local wine.
“I got an email from Matteo this morning,” Lorenzo said casually.
Chloe paused. “I thought you left your phone in the safe.”
“I checked the laptop while you were in the shower. I couldn't resist.”
“And?”
“The Q1 profits for the legitimate shipping division are up forty percent. The Nevada subsidiary is clean. The FBI officially closed their monitoring of our accounts. We are completely free.”

Chloe raised her glass. “I told you honesty pays.”
“It does,” Lorenzo agreed, clinking his glass against hers. “Especially when my CFO is a genius.”
