Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
When they filed back into the courtroom, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.
The judge asked the foreman for the verdict, and the words felt like music to my ears.
Guilty on all counts of grand larceny, federal wire fraud, and embezzlement.
Guilty on all counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
My mother collapsed into her chair, sobbing loudly as the reality of her future sank in.
My father stared blankly at the wall, his arrogance finally broken.
Even Clara, who had tried to play the victim, was found completely guilty of defrauding a federal trust.
The judge looked down at them with pure contempt.
“In all my years on the bench, I have rarely seen a family so utterly devoid of humanity,” the judge stated.
“You traded your own daughter’s life for money, and now, you will pay with your freedom.”
