Chapter 3 - The Hospital Confrontation

It took exactly two hours for my parents to burst through the doors of the maternity ward.
They looked completely unhinged, their designer clothes wrinkled and their faces red with rage.
“What did you do?!” my mother shrieked, storming toward my bed.
She didn't even glance toward the incubator where her newborn granddaughter was fighting for her life.
“The bank is saying our accounts are under federal investigation!” my father yelled, pointing a trembling finger at me.
I pressed the call button, calmly looking them dead in the eye.
“I didn't do anything but tell the truth,” I said softly.
Before my mother could lunge at me again, the hospital room door swung open.
Two armed security guards and three local police officers stepped inside.
Agent Sarah Jenkins followed closely behind them, holding a thick stack of warrants.
“Evelyn and Richard Vance,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with authority.
“You are under arrest for felony assault, financial fraud, and embezzlement.”
My mother’s face went completely pale as the officers slapped cold metal handcuffs onto her wrists.
“This is a mistake! She’s lying!” she screamed, thrashing against the officers.

My father just stood there in stunned silence as they read him his Miranda rights.
I watched them being dragged out of the room, feeling nothing but cold satisfaction.
