Agent Sarah Jenkins did not waste a single second after hanging up the phone.
Within an hour, she was standing in my hospital room, her federal badge clipped to her blazer.
The steady beeping of Maya’s heart monitor was the only sound in the room as I handed Sarah the encrypted flash drive I had hidden in my go-bag.
“This is everything,” I told her, my voice hoarse but steady.
“Bank statements, forged signatures, off-shore accounts, and the fake deeds Clara used to secure her mortgage.”
Sarah plugged the drive into her laptop, her eyes scanning the data as her expression hardened.
“They didn’t just steal from you; they’ve defrauded multiple federal institutions,” she said, looking up at me.
“I can freeze their accounts right now.”
I looked over at the neonatal intensive care unit through the glass window, watching my tiny daughter fight for every breath.
My family had left us both to die in that pool just to cover their tracks.
“Do it,” I whispered.
“Freeze every single cent.”
With a few keystrokes and a secure call to a federal judge, the dominoes began to fall.
By sunset, my parents’ credit cards were entirely locked out.
Clara’s trust accounts were frozen pending a federal audit.
