Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally

That evening, there was a soft knock on my hospital room door.
It was Marcus, the bartender who had risked his life to pull me out of the pool.
He was holding a small, stuffed teddy bear and looking slightly nervous.
“I hope it’s okay that I came,” he said, stepping into the room.
“I just wanted to make sure you and the baby were alright.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I thanked the man who had literally saved our lives.
He sat down and told me that he had already given a full statement to the police.
“I saw everything,” Marcus said firmly.
“Your mother pushed you intentionally, and your father told everyone to let you drown.”
His testimony was the nail in the coffin for their assault charges.
The string quartet and other guests had been too distracted, but Marcus had been watching the crowd.
He promised to testify in court, refusing to back down even when my father’s expensive lawyers tried to intimidate him.

Over the next few weeks, Marcus visited the hospital almost every day.
He brought me real coffee, helped me walk the halls during my recovery, and became a true friend when I had nobody else.
