Chapter 2 - The Declined Cards

The chaos started the very next morning at Clara’s lavish beachfront condo.
I knew this because Sarah was monitoring their financial pings in real-time.
Clara had tried to pay the extravagant fifty-thousand-dollar catering bill from her baby shower, but the transaction was instantly declined.
She tried three different gold cards, all of which flashed red with fraud alerts.
Panic must have set in quickly, because my phone began ringing incessantly.
First Clara, then my mother, and finally my father.
They left dozens of furious voicemails, demanding to know if I had done something to the accounts since I worked in finance.
I didn't answer a single one.
I just sat in my hospital bed, listening to their frantic voices transition from arrogance to absolute terror.
“She’s not answering!” I heard my mother scream in the background of one voicemail.
“Get down to the hospital and make her fix this!”
They still thought they held all the power.
