Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later, the courtroom was packed.

The story had leaked to the local press, and sensational headlines dubbed it the "Stolen Identity Surrogate Scandal."

I sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing a sharp navy suit, feeling more empowered than I ever had in my life.

Tyler sat across the aisle, looking gaunt and defeated.

My mother sat next to him, refusing to make eye contact with anyone.

Madison was conspicuously absent, still undergoing intensive therapy.

The prosecution called the corrupted lab technician to the stand.

Tearfully, the technician admitted to accepting fifty thousand dollars from my mother to swap the genetic material.

The courtroom erupted in gasps.

The judge slammed his gavel, demanding order.

Next, the nurse from the hospital testified about the fraudulent birth certificate request.

She painted a vivid picture of Tyler sneaking out of the room to alter the paperwork while I was recovering from childbirth.

When it was my turn to speak, I walked to the stand with my head held high.

I didn't cry.

I looked directly at my mother and told the judge exactly how it felt to have my body, my child, and my grief manipulated for her sick game.

"She didn't see me as a daughter," I stated clearly into the microphone.

"She saw me as an incubator for her favorite child's fantasy."

The silence in the courtroom was absolute.

Even the defense attorney had no cross-examination.

The truth was undeniable.
