Chapter 6 - The Confession

The precinct was cold and smelled of stale coffee.
I sat behind a two-way mirror with Attorney Davis, watching the detective interrogate my mother.
Her arrogant facade had finally cracked under the pressure of handcuffs.
"I didn't try to kidnap anyone!" she cried, wiping her mascara-stained face.
"I just wanted to see my Madison Grace!"
"Her name is Rose," the detective corrected her sternly, tossing a file onto the metal table.
"And we have a recorded phone call where you admit to bribing a medical professional."
My mother flinched as the detective played the audio of our phone call.
"That... that was out of context," she stammered.
"The FBI doesn't care about context when it comes to medical fraud and identity theft," the detective replied dryly.
In the adjacent interrogation room, Tyler was breaking much faster.
Through the camera feed, I watched my husband—the man I had promised my life to—sob like a child.
"It was all her idea!" Tyler pleaded, pointing at the wall separating him from my mother.
"She said if I didn't go along with it, she would tell everyone I was shooting blanks and leave me penniless."
He looked pathetic.
I realized I hadn't loved him in a long time.
Our marriage had been a performance, orchestrated by my mother to maintain a perfect image.
"Press full charges," I told Davis, turning away from the glass.
"I want them to pay for every single lie."
May you like
Davis nodded, his eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction.
"They will."
