Chapter 3 - Legal Warfare

The next morning, the sun rose over my father’s quiet suburban home, but I felt like I was in a war zone.

Attorney Davis, an old friend of my father, sat across from me at the kitchen table.

He had already drafted the emergency injunctions.

“Your husband committed fraud by attempting to alter a legal document without your consent,” Davis explained, sipping his black coffee.

“Combined with the medical fraud orchestrated by your mother, we have a very strong case for immediate full custody.”

My chest ached with the betrayal, but looking at Rose’s sleeping face gave me a surge of adrenaline.

She had Julian’s nose.

I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it the moment she was born.

My phone rang again; it was an unknown number, but I knew who it was.

I put it on speakerphone and hit accept.

“You have no right to keep my granddaughter from me!” my mother’s shrill voice echoed through the kitchen.

“You committed a federal crime, Mom,” I said, keeping my voice dangerously level.

“I did it to keep this family together!” she screamed.

“Madison needed a purpose, and Tyler needed a child to keep you from leaving him!”

“I fixed everything!”

“You broke everything,” I corrected her.

Attorney Davis signaled for me to keep her talking.

“How did you even bypass the clinic’s security protocols?” I asked.

“Money,” she scoffed, sounding arrogant.

“I bribed the lab technician to swap Tyler’s dead sample for Julian’s.”

“I told Madison the eggs were hers so she would feel a maternal bond.”

Davis gave me a triumphant thumbs-up; he had recorded the entire call.

“Thanks for the confession, Mom,” I said.

“My lawyer will be in touch.”

I hung up, feeling a massive weight lift off my shoulders.

They were going to pay.
