Chapter 4 - The Aftermath of Deception

News of the scandal broke within our extended family like a wildfire.

My aunts and cousins, who had initially congratulated Madison on Facebook, were now horrified.

The original Facebook post was deleted, but the internet is forever.

Screenshots of my mother welcoming “Madison Grace” circulated among our social circle, accompanied by the truth of her psychotic scheme.

Tyler tried to empty our joint bank accounts.

Fortunately, Attorney Davis had moved faster, freezing the assets pending the divorce proceedings.

Tyler was left with nothing but his lies.

Madison, unable to cope with the public humiliation, checked herself into a psychiatric facility.

I felt a brief flicker of pity for her, but it was quickly extinguished by the memory of her carrying those balloons into my hospital room.

She had been fully prepared to steal my child.

My father stayed by my side through it all, a silent pillar of strength.

He had moved out of the house he shared with my mother the night before I gave birth, having finally uncovered her plot.

“I should have left her years ago,” he confessed one evening as we sat on the porch.

“I’m just glad you’re here now,” I told him, resting my head on his shoulder.

Rose cooed from her stroller, completely unaware of the hurricane she had been born into.

I realized then that family isn’t always blood.

Sometimes, the blood you share is exactly what you need to run away from.

And sometimes, the family you choose—like Julian, whose legacy now lived on—is the only thing that matters.
