Chapter 2 - The Eviction

By sunset, Clara was buried. By nightfall, I was at work.

Julian and Vivienne had left the cemetery early, assuming they could retreat to the sprawling Manhattan penthouse to regroup and call their own lawyers. But Clara had planned perfectly.

When Julian’s black town car pulled up to the luxury building, his keycard flashed red. When he demanded the concierge let him up, he was met by three armed private security guards.

I was waiting in the grand lobby, sitting in a velvet wingback chair, holding a folder.

“What is the meaning of this, Eleanor?” Julian shouted, his face flushed with rage and panic. Vivienne stood behind him, looking nervously at the guards. “My clothes are up there! My safe! My life!”

“Your life was funded by my daughter,” I replied calmly, standing up. “The deed transferred to my name the moment her heart stopped. You are trespassing.”

I snapped my fingers, and one of the guards dropped two heavy black garbage bags at Julian’s custom-made leather shoes.

“Your clothes,” I said. “And your golf clubs. Everything else in that penthouse—the art, the jewelry, the furniture—was purchased with Clara’s money. It stays.”

“You can’t do this!” Vivienne shrieked, her earlier arrogance completely vanished. “We have rights!”

I turned my gaze to the mistress. “You won the man, Vivienne. Take him. But you didn't win the bank account. I hope your love is strong enough to survive a studio apartment in Queens.”

Julian lunged toward me, but the guards immediately pinned him against the marble wall of the lobby.

“If you ever come near me or my properties again,” I told him, looking him dead in the eye, “I will ruin whatever is left of you. Throw them out.”
