Chapter 1 - The Single Dollar

The silence in the chapel was absolute. Mr. Thorne adjusted his spectacles, his voice carrying the cold weight of a gavel striking wood.

“To my mother, Eleanor Hayes, I leave the entirety of my estate, my controlling shares in Vance-Hayes Innovations, the marital home in Aspen, the Manhattan penthouse, and all liquid assets.”

Julian’s face drained of color. He stepped forward, his platinum watch suddenly looking very heavy on his wrist. “That’s impossible. I am her husband. By law, I am entitled to half.”

Mr. Thorne didn't blink. “Clara was exceptionally thorough, Mr. Vance. As the primary founder of the company, she had you sign an ironclad postnuptial agreement three months ago, overriding your marital rights. Furthermore, she left a specific provision for you.”

The lawyer looked down at the parchment. “To my husband, Julian, I leave the sum of one single dollar. This is not an oversight. It is a deliberate reflection of his worth, and a legal safeguard to ensure he cannot contest this will on the grounds of being forgotten.”

A collective gasp echoed through the pews. The elderly women stopped praying and started staring.

Vivienne dropped her hand from Julian’s arm, her crimson lips parting in shock. “Julian,” she hissed, “what does he mean, one dollar?”

Julian ignored her, his eyes locked on me. The smug, untouchable widower was gone, replaced by a man watching his empire evaporate into the chapel air.

“You did this,” Julian snarled at me, stepping toward the casket. “You poisoned her mind against me.”

I finally moved. I stepped directly into his path, placing myself between the man who broke my daughter’s heart and the casket she was resting in.

“I didn't have to poison anything, Julian,” I said, my voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “You did that all on your own. Now, get out of my daughter’s funeral before I have you removed in handcuffs.”
