Chapter 8 - The Final Sentencing

The day of Martha's sentencing arrived with a bitter winter chill.

I flew to Florida with Abigail, leaving the boys safely at home with a trusted neighbor.

The courtroom was cold, sterile, and heavily guarded by federal marshals.

Martha sat at the defense table, wearing a drab prison uniform that stripped away her fake glamour.

She looked older, smaller, and entirely defeated.

When the judge asked if anyone wanted to deliver a victim impact statement, I stood up.

I walked to the podium, feeling the heavy weight of thirty years of lies on my shoulders.

"You stole me because you felt empty, Martha," I said, my voice echoing clearly.

"But you never tried to fill that emptiness with love, you only filled it with control."

Martha refused to look at me, staring blankly at the wooden table.

"You robbed Abigail of a daughter, and you robbed me of a true mother," I continued.

"And when you ran out of money, you tried to throw my children onto the street."

I took a deep breath, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over my soul.

"You have no power over me anymore, and I forgive you just so I can forget you."

I returned to my seat beside Abigail, grabbing her hand tightly.

The judge did not show Martha any mercy during the sentencing phase.

She was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for kidnapping, fraud, and forgery.

Given her advanced age, it was effectively a life sentence.

As the bailiffs led her away in handcuffs, she finally looked back at me.

There was no apology in her eyes, only a bitter realization of her total defeat.

I turned my back on her and walked out of the courtroom.
